Tips for Finding the Best Fit for Your Family

Not all doulas are the same. And that's a good thing.

Just like choosing a provider, finding the right doula isn't simply about choosing someone with a lot of five-star reviews or picking the first person who pops up on Google. Doulas bring different personalities, philosophies, training backgrounds, strengths, experiences, and approaches to care.

The "best" doula isn't necessarily the one everyone else loves.

It's the one that's the best fit for you.

Start With You, Not the Doula

Before you begin scrolling through profiles or reaching out to everyone in our directory, start by asking yourself:

  • What matters most to me in pregnancy, birth, or postpartum?

  • What kind of support am I hoping for?

  • Do I want lots of education and information—or someone more hands-on and nurturing?

  • Am I looking for someone direct and practical, or calm and quietly supportive?

  • What are my values around pregnancy, birth, feeding, parenting, or medical care?

  • What experiences, training, or specialties matter to me?

You don't need all the answers, but getting clear on what matters to you can make finding the right fit much easier.

Not All Doulas Share the Same Philosophy

People sometimes assume doulas are interchangeable. They're not.

Some doulas specialize in hospital births. Others primarily attend home births. Some have additional training in trauma-informed care, VBAC support, infant feeding, bereavement, neurodiversity, cesarean support, LGBTQ+ families, or specific comfort techniques.

Some are highly educational and evidence-focused. Others lean more toward emotional support or holistic approaches.

Some have years of experience. Some are newer but bring unique strengths or perspectives.

None of these approaches are automatically better than another. They’re simply different.

The goal isn't finding the "perfect" doula. It's finding someone whose support style and values align with yours.

Vibes Matter More Than People Think

This may sound unscientific, but it's true. Vibes matter.

Your doula will walk alongside you during some of the most vulnerable, emotional, and intense moments of your life.

You deserve to feel comfortable with them.

You deserve to feel safe asking questions.

You deserve to feel like you can be fully yourself.

A doula can be incredibly kind, knowledgeable, experienced, and wonderful—and still not be your person. And that's okay!

If something feels off, if conversation feels forced, or if you walk away thinking, They're nice, but I don't know... it's okay to keep looking.

Finding the right fit isn't about judging whether someone is a good doula.

It's about connection.

Interview More Than One Doula

Most doulas offer a free consultation or discovery call before booking. Take advantage of that and interview multiple!

These meetings are your chance to:

  • Ask questions

  • Learn about their approach

  • Discuss your goals

  • Explore values and philosophies

  • Get a feel for personality and communication style

  • Notice how you feel around them

We generally recommend meeting with at least three doulas before making a decision.

Not because the first one won't be amazing—but because comparison often helps clarify what matters most to you.

You may be surprised by who feels like the right fit.

Questions to Ask a Doula

Not sure what to ask during consultations? Here are a few ideas:

  • What does support with you look like?

  • How do you approach birth and postpartum support?

  • What trainings or certifications do you have?

  • How do you support partners?

  • What happens if my plans change?

  • How do you support clients through unexpected situations?

  • What kinds of families do you especially love serving?

  • What does communication look like during pregnancy?

And maybe most importantly:

"How do I feel after talking with this person?"

Use the Doulas of Lincoln Filters to Narrow Your Search

One of the reasons we created the Doulas of Lincoln directory was because we know searching can feel overwhelming.

You shouldn't have to contact every doula in Lincoln to find the right fit. You've got enough on your to-do list in pregnancy.

Our directory filters are designed to help you narrow down what matters most to you.

You can explore things like:

  • Birth or postpartum support

  • Certifications and training

  • Areas of specialty

  • Types of families served

  • Philosophies and approaches

  • Additional skills and services

The Bottom Line

Choosing a doula isn't about finding the most popular option or simply checking "hire a doula" off of your pregnancy to-do list.

It's about finding someone you trust and who trusts you. Someone whose values align with yours, and someone whose presence helps you feel seen, safe, and supported.

Start with what matters to you, use the filters to narrow your options, then meet with a few doulas.

Oh, and trust yourself. You got this. 😘
